It is with great excitement that we announce the launch of the website of the
Monastic Ireland: Landscape and Settlement, a project funded by the Irish Research Council.![]()
It was launched yesterday (4th December 2014) by Heather Humphreys, T.D., Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht at the Discovery Programme.
It is the aim of the Monastic Ireland project to assemble accurate and comprehensive information relating to the history, landscape and material culture of Irish monastic houses c. 1100–1700, presented online through www.monastic.ie.
It is designed by academics for experts and non-experts. It is aimed at providing the traveler around Ireland easy and accurate information about some of the various monastic sites seen in the landscape, but also scholars and students with basic information as starting points of their researchers.
As the research team progresses with their work, more monasteries will be included to the website.
