Women played a profound and frequently unacknowledged role in the career of Columbanus. This paper examines his relationships in Ireland and on the Continent, particularly with the powerful queens Brunhild and Theodelinda. How much can we ascertain about Columbanus’ own attitudes? How did his Irish formation influence his actions in Frankia and Italy?
